Fire Extinguisher, Fire Blankets and Smoke Detector and Alarm

Fire Extinguisher 

NCOP6_Section_LH_Body_and_Chassis_01Jan2011_v3 at page 69 requires:

"5.10 Fire Extinguisher

At least one fully charged and maintained fire extinguisher equipped with a hose must be installed in each vehicle in accordance with the latest version of AS 2444 Portable fire extinguishers and fire blankets - Selection and location, current at the time of motorhome/campervan conversion, in a position so as to be readily available for use in an emergency (refer to Figure LH17).

Each fire extinguisher must have an AS/NZS 1850 Portable fire extinguishers – Classification, rating and performance approval mark, showing it has a fire test rating of at least 5B. 

The fire extinguisher mounting bracket(s) must be designed and fitted so that the extinguisher is not likely to become dislodged during normal vehicle operation. Section LH Body and Chassis

If a fire extinguisher is fitted inside a cupboard, locker or bin the following sign must be affixed in a location adjacent to that enclosure so as to be clearly visible:

The sign must show a white fire extinguisher on a red background with a 5mm white border showing the words Fire Extinguisher in letters at least 16mm high.

Detailed requirements for this sign are specified in Australian Standard AS 2444.

Note: vehicles with multiple living compartments must have a complying fire extinguisher installed in each compartment in a position so as to be readily available for use in an emergency."

I fitted my extinguisher to the back of the passenger seat base with 4 x 6mm rivnuts.  The sign is not required as the fire extinguisher is not fitted inside a cupboard, locker or bin.


Fire Blanket 

While NCOP6_Section_LH_Body_and_Chassis_01Jan2011_v3 does not require a fire blanket, only an extinguisher. I have a fire blanket that will be fitted with the kitchen.

Smoke Detector

I have also purchased a AS 3786:2014 Smoke alarms and it will be installed before anyone sleeps in the van.  I am contemplating also putting a second smoke alarm under the bed near the battery bank.  If there was to be a fire, given the van has no gas, the battery and inverter/controllers would be the other likely source.

Insulating and Sound Deadening the Van - Walls Off and Back On

Making a big start on the 8020 Framing

  8020 Wall Rails The main way to anchor the 8020 framing to the floor of the van and to the walls for all the basement frames is with 8020 Single T-Slot . The rails were measured and drilled as required with 8mm diameter holes and countersunk so that the countersunk bolts would finish flush with the bottom of each T-Slot. The wall rails were then drilled, 8mm Zinc rivnuts fitted to the the van's mid rail between the Mercedes Wall panels.  Before finally fixing with 35mm M8 Stainless Steel Bolts, each Zinc rivnut was re-taped to clean up each thread,  Loctite Threadlocker Blue 242  was applied and each wall rail the length of each rails was fixed to the wall of the van with Soudal T-Rex Extreme .
